Marouane Fellaini would be a perfect midfield partner for Gokhan Inler, according to Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentis.

The Belgium midfielder has struggled to find consistent form at Manchester United following his £27.5m transfer to Old Trafford from Everton last summer.

Fellaini made a disappointing 12 Premier League starts in his debut season and the 26-year-old’s spot in United’s starting line-up is under threat following the arrival of Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao.

But Napoli could provide the former Everton midfielder with an escape route out of United after Napoli president Di Laurentiis expressed his desire to sign Fellaini.

“They [Fellaini and Inler] would make a nice pair,” said the Napoli president.

“Together they have a hairstyle that looks like a lion’s mane and three years ago I presented Inler with the mask of a lion!”

Fellaini scored 25 goals in 141 Premier League appearances following his move to Everton in 2008.
