Tony Gale believes AC Milan midfielder Nigel de Jong is the type of player that Manchester United need to sign.

The Red Devils have been linked with a move for the Netherlands international in recent weeks as Louis van Gaal looks to bolster his midfield.

De Jong, who spent four years at Manchester City, was part of the United manager’s Oranje squad for the World Cup, making four appearances in Brazil.

And former West Ham United man Gale reckons De Jong would be a good purchase to help the Red Devils cope in the absence of injured midfielder Michael Carrick.

“Manchester City let him go, so their fans will be laughing at that one,” Gale told Sky Sports News.

“But obviously he is the type of player that they need, holding in midfield. Michael Carrick is a big miss and he won’t be back for a couple of months.

“Herrera has come in and he’ll take time to settle and Fletcher has a long-term illness. All of a sudden massive problems. He has to get them in the transfer market.”
