Wayne Rooney is among the top 10 players in the world, according to Gerard Pique.

The 28-year-old England international was criticised for a disappointing performance in Brazil despite scoring his first-ever World Cup.

He is a top-quality striker, the main player for Manchester United along with Robin van Persie

Rooney, who signed a new five-year deal in February, scored 17 goals and made eight assists in 29 Premier League appearances last season.

But former United defender Pique defended the Red Devils striker, insisting that Rooney is good enough to play in any team in the world.

“For me, Wayne Rooney is the best English player right now and definitely he would be in the top 10 (players in the world),” Pique said.

“He is a top-quality striker, the main player for Manchester United along with Robin van Persie, and he can play in every team in the world that he wants.”
