Mario Balotelli has heaped praise on Steven Gerrard after the veteran midfielder became the first Liverpool player to score in 16 successive seasons.

The Liverpool captain netted a second-half penalty to help the Reds secure a 3-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday as Balotelli made his first appearance for his new club.

Goals from Raheem Sterling and a superb solo effort from Alberto Moreno wrapped up an impressive victory for Brendan Rodgers’ men at White Hart Lane.

And Balotelli was quick to single out his new captain for special praise after the 34-year-old’s goal in north London.

Earlier, Balotelli had tweeted his delight after experiencing victory in his first game since his move from AC Milan last week.

He wrote: “Great win! Wonderful experience to play my first match in Liverpool FC shirt #Honor fans were fantastic. travel safe back home #LFC #YNWA”
