Manchester City handed Chelsea early initiative in the Premier League title race after a surprise 1-0 loss to Stoke City at The Etihad.

The Citizens struggled to break down a dogged Potters side in the first half as Stevan Jovetic failed to repeat his goal-scoring heroics from City’s 3-1 victory over Liverpool on Monday.

Mark Hughes, who was returning to The Etihad after being sacked by City in 2010, secured a famous victory over his former club thanks to Mame Biram Diouf.

The former Manchester United striker dealt a blow to the Red Devils’s rivals after the Norwegian netted a fine solo effort with 20 minutes remaining at The Etihad.

“I’ve been working so hard, I tried just to stay on my feet and keep on going. We will enjoy this win, it is a big one,” Diouf told BBC Sport.
