Steven Gerrard declared that Mario Balotelli can be the difference between Liverpool challenging for trophies this season after helping the Reds to an impressive victory at Tottenham Hotspur.

The £16m signing missed a number of opportunities to score on his debut at White Hart Lane, as goals from Raheem Sterling, Gerrard and Alberto Moreno handed the Reds a comfortable victory in north London.

He could be the difference regarding whether we can compete or not

The spotlight was well and truly on the Italy international as he played 61 minutes and Gerrard, who scored his goal from the penalty spot, was full of praise for the “terrific” forward after the game.

“Everyone had eyes on him and credit to him I thought he was terrific for an hour,” said Gerrard. “He could be the difference regarding whether we can compete or not.

“He has been terrific since he came in. He works hard and he will only improve with a manager like Brendan Rodgers.

“I am aware he is a terrific penalty taker, I am sure he will get the chances over the season. The more good penalty takers we have the better, especially for cup competitions.”

The win left Liverpool fifth in the Premier League on six points as they bounced back from last week’s 3-1 defeat at Manchester City.
