Tottenham Hotspur target Mateo Musacchio is set to stay at Villarreal, according to manager Marcelino Garcia Toral.

The Argentina defender has been heavily linked with a move to the north London club in recent weeks as compatriot Mauricio Pochettino bids to strengthen his defence.

The 23-year-old has been a mainstay of Villarreal’s side since joining from River Plate in 2009, scoring three goals in 139 La Liga appearances.

And Villarreal manager Toral is almost 100 per cent confident that the Rosario-born centre-half will snub interest from Premier League outfit Tottenham.

“We expect a definitive solution for this week,” Toral is quoted as saying.

“I believe that Musacchio will stay with us but I cannot confirm this 100 per cent.”

Musacchio made his Argentina debut against Nigeria in 2011.
