The Gunners snapped up the England international on a five-year deal on Monday after the forward was deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.
He is a very good technical player and awkward in a way for opponents to read
The 23-year-old’s move came as Louis van Gaal bolstered his attacking options with the signing of Radamel Falcao on loan from Monaco.
And former United goalkeeper Schmeichel feels that Welbeck will be a big hit at Emirates Stadium.
“Welbeck will be missed,” Schmeichel told the Daily Express.
“The problem is and it is something Sir Alex Ferguson always said, ‘It goes both ways. You need to give the chance for young players to prosper and develop’.
“The same goes with arrival of Radamel Falcao – Welbeck would be fourth choice and he wouldn’t have had the opportunity to play.
“Personally it is a great move for him and he has been a fantastic servant for United.
“He has only scored 20 times for United but the way he played and the positions he took up made him technically awkward. He is a very good technical player and awkward in a way for opponents to read.
“I like him as a player and I wish him all the best as an Arsenal player.”
