Arsenal striker better team player than Daniel Sturridge, says Joey Barton
Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck is a better team player than England rival Daniel Sturridge, according to Joey Barton
Roy Hodgson should start Danny Welbeck ahead of Daniel Sturridge despite the Liverpool striker being a far more talented individual, according to Joey Barton.
The 23-year-old Arsenal forward scored twice to help England secure a vital 2-0 victory over Switzerland in their opening Euro 2016 qualifier in Basel on Monday.
Sturridge is a great individual player but until he gives more to the team collective his role should be as an impact player
Sturridge missed the clash against the Swiss after picking up a thigh injury during England training on Friday and returning to Liverpool for further treatment.
And Queens Park Rangers midfielder Barton feels Welbeck is a more valuable commodity to the Three Lions despite Sturridge’s unquestioned talented.
“Prefer Welbeck to Sturridge. Although DS is a far talented individual. DW is much better team player,” Barton tweeted.
“DW should start. Run the legs off himself. DS off the bench when fit. Better chance of his individualism working when opp players tire.
“I think Sturridge is a great individual player but until he gives more to the team collective his role should be as an impact player.”
Welbeck has scored 10 goals in 28 England appearances, whilst Sturridge has netted five goals in 16 Three Lions caps.
