Arsenal’s £16m signing of Danny Welbeck from Manchester United will turn out to be the “bargain of the century”, according to Jamie Redknapp.

The England international signed a five-year deal with the Gunners last week after being deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford following the arrival of Radamel Falcao.

“At £16m, he is the bargain of the century

Welbeck scored twice as the Three Lions kicked off their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign with a 2-0 win over Switzerland on Monday.

And former Spurs and Liverpool midfielder Redknapp says that Welbeck will prove to be a shrewd acquisition by the Gunners.

“Danny Welbeck is a top-class signing for Arsenal and he showed himself to be an instinct player on Monday night,” Redknapp wrote in his column for the Daily Mail.

“He had too much time in the first half and, looking to pick out Sterling or Wayne Rooney, he picked the wrong pass and the execution was poor.

“But when his chances came to score, he took them. The goals will lift his spirits.

“At £16m, he is the bargain of the century.”
