Arsene Wenger lifts lid on Danny Welbeck’s Arsenal transfer mystery
Arsene Wenger says Danny Welbeck's transfer to Arsenal was helped by his early start on deadline day
Arsene Wenger has revealed that his early start on transfer deadline day contributed hugely to Arsenal’s signing of Danny Welbeck.
The Gunners manager travelled to Rome for a charity match at the crack of dawn on the final day of the summer window as the north London club swooped to bring the 23-year-old striker to Emirates Stadium.
And Wenger said that the deal may not have gone through if he had not been up early to travel to Italy that day.
Wenger told BT Sport: “It’s very simple because I arrived very early at 07:00 BST at the airport and that’s where I heard that he might be available and could call straight away.
“Because it was the last day of the transfer window it gave us basically a complete day to complete a transfer what was not obvious.
“If you start at midday it’s nearly impossible but we got the news very early and with my team managed to do it just before midnight.”
