Alan Curbishley believes Arsene Wenger must play Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil in the No10 role.

The Gunners manager started the Germany international in his preferred position on Saturday, and the move paid dividends in a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa.

The 25-year-old netted his first Premier League goal of the season before teeing up Danny Welbeck in a blistering three-minute spell at Villa Park.

Former West Ham United manager Curbishley pointed out that Ozil is wasted on the wing, highlighting how the German becomes isolated if Arsenal are struggling.

“It is very difficult to drop a player when everyone is clamouring for it,” Curbishley told Sky Sports News.

“The player wants to see a little bit of loyalty and be reassured. I think that is what Wenger did.

“He restored him to the No10 spot. Playing out wide, he can get isolated.

“In the No10 spot, he can create and make things happen and get in advanced positions to score.

“Wenger tends to play him on the left and the right, but he needs to play in behind the centre forward.

“Hopefully Wenger will keep him there.”
