Arsene Wenger: My plans for Abou Diaby at Arsenal
Arsene Wenger says he plans to develop Abou Diaby into a more defensive-minded player for Arsenal
Arsene Wenger has revealed that he is trying to “transform” Abou Diaby into a more defensive player for Arsenal.
The French midfielder started his first game in 18 months on Tuesday night as the Gunners lost 2-1 to Southampton in the third round of the League Cup at Emirates Stadium.
He can be very interesting because he has all the attributes to do it
Diaby’s Arsenal career has been blighted by injury in recent seasons but now the 28-year-old is returning to full fitness, Wenger believes that he has the attributes to play a deeper role in midfield.
Wenger said: “I try to transform it [Diaby to be more defensive], yes because I feel because he was injured for a long time and he has the physical potential to win the challenges, to face the game will be easier for him than to play with his back to goal with the injuries he had.
“I tried to develop him in a deeper role, I think he can do it. He can be very interesting because he has all the attributes to do it.
“After, he must love it as well because he’s more of an offensive-minded player.”
Diaby played 67 minutes for the Gunners in Tuesday’s loss to the Saints.
