Mesut Ozil says he is grateful to have the backing of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

The Gunners midfielder has made a muted start to his second season in the Premier League, completing 90 minutes at Everton and Leicester City.

What’s most important for me is what the boss thinks of me. He gives me his trust and he knows the potential I have

Mesut Ozil

Arsenal manager Wenger defended his club-record £42.5m signing in recent weeks, insisting that everything Ozil “does is intelligent”.

And the 25-year-old Germany international is thrilled to have the unequivocal backing of the 64-year-old Arsenal manager.

“I’m not so sure about the praise. You always have to deliver on the pitch,” Ozil told Arsenal’s website.

“I’m so proud to play for a club with so many fans but my goal is firstly to help the team on the pitch and I do that.

“What’s most important for me is what the boss thinks of me. He gives me his trust and he knows the potential I have. I’m just thankful that he’s given me his faith and I think that if he says I play intelligently, then he’s probably right!”

Arsenal face Premier League champions Manchester City at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
