Phil Jagielka denied Liverpool three points in the Merseyside derby after helping Everton to rescue a 1-1 draw in injury-time.

The Toffees captain rifled a finish past Reds shot stopper Simon Mignolet after Reds skipper Steven Gerrard had broken the deadlock in the 65th minute at Anfield.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order to an exciting derby encounter.

Former United defender Danny Higginbotham (@Higginbotham05) hails Gerrard: “When great players are questioned they always come up with a massive response. Steven Gerrard just did that. What a player.”

QPR midfielder Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) was impressed with the captain’s free-kick: “Gerrard shut one or two of his recent critics, with a superb free kick. Thought Balotelli had a go today. Looked like he cared at least.”

Sean St Ledger (@seanstledger12) doesn’t reckon it will get much better for the Everton skipper: “Jagielka should’ve just walked off after that!! #worldy”

Former Everton midfielder Phil Neville (@fizzer18) praises the Toffees upcoming centre-half: “Browning was great when he came on – stones man of the match for me!”

Barcelona forward Gerard Deulofeu (@gerardeulofeu) is keeping a close eye on his former side: “Yeeeesss!! Phil Jagielka Captain”

Everton legend Tim Cahill (@Tim_Cahill) is delighted for his former team-mate: “hahahahahahahaa JAGS What a goal. #COYB”

Ex-Liverpool manager Roy Evans (@Roy_Evo): “Deserved to win no complaints about the effort but Jags struck a worldy don’t save them just thought we dropped a little deeper late on”

Former Everton goalkeeper Nigel Martyn (@nmartyn25) can’t wait to watch the derby highlights: “Good result for @Everton today in the derby , Jagielka screamer , think I’ll be watching march of the day tonight !!!”

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) praises the English talent on show: “Left before Jagielka’s mis-hit, enjoyed the game thought Stones was outstanding and Lallana getting better every game.”

Michale Owen (@themichaelowen): “Phenomenal strike from Jagielka. Couldn’t see Everton scoring in the second half. A point doesn’t help either team…”
