Chelsea legend refuses to write off Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard
Chelsea legend Pat Nevin feels Steven Gerrard still has "plenty to offer" Liverpool despite his ageing body
Pat Nevin has refused to write off Steven Gerrard, insisting that Brendan Rodgers need to give the Liverpool captain more help in midfield.
The 34-year-old veteran midfielder was criticised for an ineffectual performance in a 3-1 defeat at West Ham United at Upton Park on Saturday.
errard is still a fantastic player. I don’t know how many times he [Steven Gerrard] has been written off time and time again
Liverpool manager Rodgers has been playing Gerrard in a holding role over the past nine months, impressing towards the end of the 2013/14 campaign.
Whilst Nevin accepts that Gerrard can’t match the powerful runs of his younger contemporaries, the former Chelsea man says the Reds skipper still has plenty to offer.
“If you find any weakness, it doesn’t matter who you are,” Nevin told Newstalk’s Off The Ball.
“Rio Ferdinand was one of the finest players that the Premier League has ever seen, but when he showed a weakness, they were absolutely all over him like a rash.
“Gerrard is still a fantastic player. I don’t know how many times he [Steven Gerrard] has been written off time and time again.
“There is one thing you can be absolutely clear of, he will run and run all day, but can he run with the same zest and explosive power as a young buck? He can’t. He shouldn’t be able to. There is a hell of a lot of miles on that clock.
Nevin continued: “He should be getting a bit of help around him. Talking about people who play in that position, even Cesc Fabregas is awful defensively in a holding role, but he is absolutely brilliant offensively.
“Every player has some sort of weakness. You need to know your player’s weakness and cover him.
“I’m not going to write of Steven Gerrard right now. Too many times in the past you’ve thought wait a minute that’s it, but he has come back and been absolutely fantastic.”
