Danny Welbeck confident of becoming prolific Arsenal No9
Arsenal signing Danny Welbeck wants the chance to prove that he can be a prolific centre-forward
Danny Welbeck says he is confident that he can become a prolific Arsenal number nine if the summer signing is given a chance at centre-forward.
The 23-year-old forward penned a long-team deal with the north London club on transfer deadline day last week, sealing a £16m switch to Arsenal from Manchester United.
Coming to this stage of my career, I really want to push on and be the best I can be
Welbeck netted nine goals in 25 Premier League appearances under David Moyes last season, and the England striker was deemed surplus to requirements by Louis van Gaal.
“I prefer to play as a centre-forward,” Welbeck told the Sunday Times.
“We’ll see (about his scoring rate) when I get my opportunity to do that. I’ve never had the opportunity to get a consistent run of games as No 9 but have faith in my ability.”
Welbeck, who is tipped to replace injured Daniel Sturridge in England’s side to face Switzerland on Monday, acknowledged that he is one of the Three Lions’s more experienced players.
“I’m no longer a young player. There are a lot of younger players than me in the squad, by quite a few years,” Welbeck added.
“It’s good to see that youngsters are being given the opportunity to play in the national side. You see in training the outstanding talent they’ve got and how it can have a massive impact.
