Danny Welbeck isn’t ruthless like Ian Wright, says Paul Scholes
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes is critical of Danny Welbeck's finish after 2-2 draw with Manchester City
Paul Scholes says Danny Welbeck needs to develop a ruthless finishing streak like Arsenal legend Ian Wright.
The England international enjoyed a largely positive Arsenal debut as the 23-year-old’s runs caused Manchester City problems during a 2-2 draw at The Emirates.
He’s not a Ruud Van Nistelrooy he’s not an Andy Cole they would have put them away no doubt
However, Welbeck, who moved to Arsenal in a £16m deal from Manchester United last week, hit the cross after being presented with his only clear-cut chance of the clash in the 10th minute.
And former United midfielder Scholes cast doubt on whether Welbeck can develop into a prolific finisher like Red Devils legends Andy Cole and Ruud van Nistelrooy, or former Arsenal striker Wright.
“When the big chance comes he didn’t take it. I think it’s to do with ruthlessness,” Scholes told BT Sport.
“It’s the part of the game he needs to improve. He’s not a Ruud Van Nistelrooy he’s not an Andy Cole they would have put them away no doubt. He [Ian Wright] would have put that away.”
Welbeck scored nine goals in 25 Premier League appearances for United last season.
