Arsene Wenger was in no mood to make excuses after his Arsenal side slumped to defeat by Dortmund in their Champions League opener.

Ciro Immobile fired the German side into the lead on the stroke of half-time with a low finish, before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made it 2-0 in the 48th minute.

Wenger’s side managed just one shot on target all night as they failed to click into gear – and the Frenchman conceded that his team were not at the races.

“We weren’t at the requested level tonight and we lost,” said Wenger. “They deserved their win.

“I still believe that we were a bit unlucky because we conceded just before half-time and just after. After that, the game was difficult of course.

“But despite our very average performance, we had plenty of chances, that’s a little bit the paradox of the night. We could have been leading the game, but they as well – they had plenty of chances.”

Summer signing Danny Welbeck missed a number of opportunities to net his first Arsenal goal, and Wenger is hoping he gets off the mark soon.

“He was dangerous,” Wenger said of Welbeck. “He tired in the second half and couldn’t finish tonight.

“He looked lively and for all the rest he did well. He needs a goal to get that off his shoulders.”
