Mikel Arteta admitted that Arsenal simply weren’t good enough after Borussia Dortmund strolled to victory in their Champions League opener.

Ciro Immobile fired the home side into the lead on the stroke of half-time with a low finish, before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made it 2-0 in the 48th minute.

Arsene Wenger’s side managed just one shot on target all night and captain Arteta was in no mood to make excuses after the final whistle.

“We faced a top side in one of the most difficult stadiums in Europe, we knew that from the start,” said Arteta.

“They put under pressure [but] it was very sloppy from us to concede the goal with 20 seconds to go in the first half from our own throw-in.

“After you go 1-0 down here it’s very difficult. They are very good on the break and we didn’t perform well enough tonight.

“They have a lot of pace up front when they play here and we knew [that].

“We gave the ball away too many times in our own half in difficult positions. When you do that against this side, you are dead. They were the better side tonight.”

Arsenal next face Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday looking for their first win in three outings.

“We have another big game coming up now in four days against Villa away and we better be ready because it’s going to be a tough one,” Arteta added.
