Wayne Rooney has revealed his delight at seeing Danny Welbeck score twice as England beat Switzerland on Monday night.

The Arsenal striker netted a brace in the second half to hand Roy Hodgson’s men a 2-0 win in their opening Euro 2016 qualifier in Basel.

And England skipper Rooney, who played alongside Welbeck at Manchester United before the forward’s move to Arsenal last week, was thrilled to see the 23-year-old find the net.

“We defended well as a team which was important,” Rooney told ITV Sport.

“We caught them well on the break with the speed we’ve been talking about. Danny got two great goals, I’m delighted for him.

“We’ve put the work in, we worked on our defensive shape when we haven’t got the ball and then springing from defence to attack, which you saw with the two goals tonight.

“We played some great stuff today. We’re pleased. The things we’ve worked on the training ground have paid off, so it’s a happy performance for us.”
