Ex-Man United coach surprised Louis van Gaal didn’t sign a new centre-half
Rene Meulensteen admits that he was surprised that Manchester United didn't sign a centre-half this summer
Rene Meulensteen admits that he was surprised that Manchester United did not bring in a new central defender during the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils signed a number of attacking reinforcements over the summer, including the likes of Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao.
Everybody expected they would go for a big, strong central defender
But new manager Louis van Gaal opted not to bring in a centre-half, despite the departures of veteran duo Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.
And former United coach Meulensteen has been left puzzled by the club’s decision not to strengthen in that position.
“Yes [I’m surprised they didn’t sign a new centre-half]. It’s been well documented on TV and in newspapers about them needing one,” Meulensteen told talkSPORT.
“Everybody expected they would go for a big, strong central defender and another strong midfielder.”
