Radamel Falcao was the most-mentioned player on Twitter during a hectic transfer deadline day as the striker sealed his loan move to Manchester United.

The 28-year-old striker sparked more than 1.5m tweets on the social network as he closed in on his £6m temporary switch from Monaco.

Danny Welbeck was the second most-discussed player as the England striker sealed a £16m transfer from United to Arsenal on a long-term deal.

Javier Hernandez, who moved to Real Madrid from United on loan, Daley Blind and Tom Cleverley completed the top five most-mentioned players.

There were more than 4.2m tweets sent throughout the day, as Twitter erupted into life with speculation, debate and confirmation.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the most-discussed individual off the pitch was Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger. In fact, it was only the deals including Falcao, Welbeck and Hernandez that generated more Twitter conversation on the day than Wenger.

The biggest peak in Twitter conversation during the 24-hour period came at 22:58 UK time, with more than 21,000 tweets per minute. The spike can most likely be attributed to the anticipation of the deadline passing just minutes later at 23:00.

The second most-tweeted moment came at 20:31, with more than 11,000 tweets per minute moments after Blind’s transfer to Manchester United was confirmed.

The most used hashtags were: “#MUFC, #TransferDeadlineDay, #DeadlineDay, #SkyDeadlineDay and #AFC.”
