John Scales is encouraged by Mario Balotelli’s start to his Liverpool career.

The Reds striker scored his first Reds goal in a 2-1 victory over Ludogorets at Anfield in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

I’ve seen since he came to Liverpool he has put a shift in, every game and every minute he has been out there

However, former Liverpool defender Scales has been most impressed by the 24-year-old’s work ethic in his first three appearances.

“He has got all the ability in the world and the most encouraging thing is he seems to have matured to a degree that he knows what he needs to do out on the pitch,” Scales told talkSPORT.

“He can still be as mad as a hatter off the pitch, but it is what you do on the pitch. His teammates want to see him put in the effort and I’ve seen since he came to Liverpool he has put a shift in, every game and every minute he has been out there.

“He wants to work hard for the team and for himself and that is encouraging. At times he can be a real threat. He is always going to pop up [with a goal] like he did against Ludogorets, and I think this Liverpool team is going to create chances for him. It is a shrewd signing.”
