Gary Neville managed to force a wry smile at Manchester United’s current defensive woes after promising to “attack the day” on Twitter on Monday.

The Red Devils legend was left exasperated by his former side’s “soft centre” after Louis van Gaal’s side suffered a 5-3 loss to Leicester City.

The 63-year-old, who spent almost £150m on new signings this summer, has seen his side concede 12 goals in six games in all competitions this season.

But former United defender Neville was able to share a joke with ex-Middlesbrough midfielder Jan Aage Fjortoft about the Red Devils’s poor defending.

Following the defeat, Van Gaal insisted that his Manchester United defence is weak, but admits his Red Devils side need to improve their defensive organisation.

“I don’t think it is the weakness of our defence, it is the weakness of our defensive organisation from the team,” Van Gaal told BBC Sport.

“That we have to do better. You have to know when you can pass the ball and when you have to get rid of the ball.

“In this game, at 3-1 I felt we had played fantastic football but then you cannot make the errors we did.”
