Giroud and Welbeck can form good partnership, says Arsenal legend
Arsenal legend Alan Smith believes Danny Welbeck and Olivier Giroud could play well together up front for the Gunners
Danny Welbeck will complement Arsenal strike partner Olivier Giroud, according to Arsenal legend Alan Smith.
The England international has signed a long-term contract with the north London side after Arsenal agreed a £16m deal with Manchester United on transfer deadline day.
He’s quick, he can cover the ground and that’s a nice contrast to Olivier Giroud. They could actually play together
Welbeck will help fill Giroud’s void at Arsenal after the France international was sidelined for three to four months due to a broken foot which he sustained in a 2-2 draw at Everton.
And Arsenal legend Smith feels Welbeck could form a good partnership with Giroud when the 27-year-old striker recovers from his injury setback.
“I think he would appeal to Arsene Wenger and fit into the Arsenal philosophy,” Smith told Sky Sports News.
“He’s very good technically and has shown that playing for his country. He’s quick, he can cover the ground and that’s a nice contrast to Olivier Giroud. They could actually play together.
“So much depends on confidence. I think he has lacked that over the last few years. He has come in for criticism and his finishing hasn’t been the best.
“If he gets a couple of goals in a team where he doesn’t think ‘I’ve got to score today in order to stay in the team the following week,’, which was perhaps the case at Manchester United, then he can relax a little bit and his finishing will improve.”
