Jack Wilshere heaped praise on Danny Welbeck after the striker’s Arsenal debut in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City.

The 23-year-old, who joined Arsenal from Manchester United on transfer deadline day, almost scored on his first appearance for the Gunners but saw his chipped effort rebound off the post in the first half.

He was fantastic, and he showed great work-rate

But Wilshere was impressed by Welbeck’s overall display even if the striker didn’t manage to get on the score-sheet.

“He was fantastic,” said Wilshere. “Unfortunately in the first half his little chip didn’t go in but he was fantastic, and he showed great work-rate.

“He was closing the centre backs down, he was chasing back and he was quality on the ball as well so I am sure there is more to come from him.”
