Jamie Carragher can’t understand why Man United didn’t sign top centre-half
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher says it was obvious that Manchester United needed to sign a top-class centre-half
Jamie Carragher can’t understand why Manchester United failed to improve their centre-half options in the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils have conceded 12 goals in six games in all competitions following a shock 5-3 loss to newly-promoted Leicester City on Sunday.
They knew Ferdinand and Vidic were going. It smacks you in the face [they needed a new centre-half]
United manager Louis van Gaal spent almost £150m on the likes of Angel di Maria, Ander Herrera, Daley Blind and Radamel Falcao this summer.
But Liverpool legend Carragher criticised Van Gaal for failing to sign a centre-half despite the departures of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
“We’ve seen it last season [United’s soft-centre],” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“When you think of the money that they’ve spent on attacking players, why have they not addressed the problem at centre-half?
“They knew Ferdinand and Vidic were going. It smacks you in the face [they needed a new centre-half].
“When you see the centre-halves today and the money that has been spent over £150m to not buy a centre-half and address that position.”
United are 12th in the Premier League table following their second top-flight defeat of the season.
