Jose Enrique can’t wait to make his competitive return to action as the Liverpool left-back was named on the bench for the clash against Aston Villa.

The Spaniard hasn’t featured for the Reds since November after struggling to recover from a troublesome knee injury, returning to training this summer.

Enrique, who joined Liverpool from Newcastle United in 2011, is facing increased competition for places following the £12m arrival of Alberto Moreno.

Brendan Rodgers named the former Sevilla defender as his starting left-back for the visit of Villa on Saturday, but it didn’t dampen Enrique’s enthusiasm.

Earlier this week, Enrique, who has never been capped by Spain, spoke about his injury nightmare.

“It was difficult,” Enrique is quoted as saying by the Liverpool Echo. “I didn’t know at which point I’d be back, so psychologically it was really hard for me.

“Luckily, this is all in the past. I am fit again, I’ve been good and I’m now hopefully injury-free again.”
