Kevin Pietersen defends Eoin Morgan before England captain’s T20 heroics

Kevin Pietersen urges media to "wake up" after Eoin Morgan hits stunning England T20 knock to beat India

Kevin Pietersen has hit out at the media after recent questions about Eoin Morgan’s place in the side.

The former England batsman came to the defence of the Irish-born batsman on Twitter before the Middlesex man struck a majestic 71 to help the hosts beat India by three runs in their one-off T20 match.

Pietersen, who played alongside Morgan in the England set up across all formats, started his defence of Morgan earlier this week, insisting that he should not be under pressure for his place in the T20 squad.

“I am not having ANYONE call for @Eoin16’s head…pick a better top order that give him the freedom to bat with always having to rebuild!” Pietersen said.

Morgan, captaining the side for the sole Twenty20 against India at Edgbaston then hit a superb 71 from just 31 balls, striking three boundaries and seven maximums, as England posted 180-7 from their 20 overs.

Pietersen returned to the social media site to praise Morgan before launching into a rant about the media coverage of the current series.

“I really wish the cricket journo’s would think about their credibility before writing garbage like, @Eoin16 could be dropped and Cook stays!” he said.

“Well played @Eoin16! You are a match-winner! Wake up cricket journo’s! Print what the public deserve!”

Pietersen then retweeted a post from @Dave_loren which said, “@KP24 Cook and Moores are the only two people of the last people left in England who believe he is an international class one-day opener”, clearly referring to England’s under-fire captain Alastair Cook.

England will travel to Sri Lanka to play seven ODIs before a triangular tournament in Australia building up to the World Cup in February.
