Lampard: Talk with Shaw about Arsenal legend led to my retirement
Frank Lampard jokes that he finalised his decision to retire from England duty after holding a conversation with Luke Shaw
Frank Lampard has joked that he finalised his decision to retire from England duty after holding a conversation with Luke Shaw about Tony Adams.
The Chelsea legend, who called time on his England career last month, was speaking to Shaw while on international duty and referenced the former Arsenal captain, but the Manchester United defender didn’t know who he was.
And Lampard says that the chat with Shaw, who was seven years old when Adams retired from football, prompted him to quit England duty.
“I was having a chat with Luke Shaw and I mentioned Tony Adams and he didn’t seem to know who I was talking about,” said Lampard.
“I said: “Are you winding me up?” And he said: “Who did he play for?” I knew then then it was time to retire.”
Lampard retired from England duty in August after having notched up 106 caps for the Three Lions.
