Lineker & more: Twitter reacts as Europe unveil Ryder Cup wildcards

Gary Lineker and Ian Poulter tweet their thoughts after Europe name their wildcards for the Ryder Cup

By Sam Rogers

With the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles less than a month away, Europe captain Paul McGinley has named Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Stephen Gallacher as his three wildcard picks for the 12-man team event.

Poulter and Westwood are Ryder Cup veterans, the latter being Europe’s most-decorated player, but Gallacher gets his chance on the strength of a strong finish to the season and a wonderful third-place finish at last week’s Italian Open.

They join Thomas Bjorn, Jamie Donaldson, Victor Dubuisson, Sergio Garcia, Martin Kaymer, Graeme McDowell, Rory McIllroy, Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson in a strong European line-up.

Here are some of the best tweets from members of the squad, some that missed the cut and some followers from other sports.

Ian Poulter (@IanJamesPoulter) was quick to praise the strength of European golf upon hearing of his selection: “I feel for the guys that have been left out of this Ryder Cup. There were so many great players to choose from as European golf is so strong.”

Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier (@Mattletiss7) was impressed with Gallacher in Italy and deserves his first call-up: “Quite right that Stephen Gallacher gets a wild card for ryder cup after his excellent showing in Italy.”

Former England striker Gary Lineker (@Gary Lineker) was full of praise for McGinley’s selections: “Congratulations @IanJamesPoulter @WestwoodLee and Stephen Gallacher on their meritorious Ryder Cup wild card picks.”

Former England Rugby Union captain Mike Tindall (@MikeTindall13) is already looking forward to the event at Gleneagles: “Congrats @WestwoodLee and @IanJamesPoulter looks like a quality team, can’t wait #RyderCup”

Francesco Molinari (@F_Molinari) was grateful for the praise from captain McGinley despite not making the 12-man sqaud: “Thanks Paul for your kind words, I’m sure you’ll do a great job and I’ll be missing that team room. #goeurope #RyderCup”

Luke Donald (@LukeDonald), who like Molinari missed the bus for this year’s tournament, sent his best wishes to the squad, showing no hard feelings: “Thanks for all the lovely messages.”
