Liverpool will once again be genuine Premier League title contenders this season, according to captain Steven Gerrard.

The Reds finished just two points being champions Manchester City last season as they were pipped to the top-flight crown despite leading the way for much of the latter stages of the campaign.

We are genuine title contenders as we have proved we can mix it with anyone

Steven Gerrard

Some have questioned whether Brendan Rodgers’ side will be able to push for the title again this season due to their return to the Champions League.

However, veteran midfielder Gerrard is absolutely convinced that the Merseyside club will be among the contenders for the title in 2014-15.

“Without getting too carried away I think we are now a very good team and I think we can become excellent as there is still room for improvement,” Gerrard told NBC.

“The rule at Liverpool is quite clear. You try to win every competition you enter. [Rodgers] has been here for two years and I think he is desperate to get a trophy in the cabinet – that is goal number one.

“It is very important we maintain our place in the Champions League but after the journey we went on last year and the confidence we gained from it I think we are genuine title contenders as we have proved we can mix it with anyone in this league.”
