Joey Barton doesn’t believe Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli is an adequate replacement for Luis Suarez.

The Italy international has been tasked with filling the void left by Suarez after the 27-year-old sealed a £75m move to Barcleona in the summer transfer window.

The Uruguay international netted 31 goals in 33 Premier League games last season, scooping the PFA player of the year award for his goal-scoring exploits.

Balotelli has scored once in four games in all competitions since his £16m switch to Anfield from AC Milan, netting against Ludogorets in the Champions League.

But Queens Park Rangers midfielder Barton isn’t surprised Brendan Rodgers has struggled to replace Suarez, adding that Balotelli isn’t a worthy successor.

Liverpool edged into the fourth round of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night courtesy of a 14-13 victory over Middlesbrough after a 2-2 draw in extra-time.

The Reds face derby rivals Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday as the 18-time English champions look to win their first league game in three attempts.
