Charlie Nicholas feels Liverpool’s defence is still the Reds’ biggest weakness this season.

The Reds have already conceded eight goals in the Premier League so far this season and shipped two more in the League Cup win over Middlesbrough on Tuesday night.

And former Arsenal forward Nicholas says Brendan Rodgers’ side must improve their defending if they are to challenge for the title this term.

“Again last night, every set-piece that came in was a problem for them,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.

“All night there were problems and then they took a risk at the end and got a penalty given against them.

“[The first goal] is from a simple ball in from [Grant] Leadbitter and there’s no one protecting the space at the front post and that means it’s easy for a midfield player [Adam Reach] to put the ball in.

“Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a lovely free-kick and he just missed one before half time when he could’ve easily scored again.”
