Liverpool will finish above Manchester United in the race for a top-four finish this season, according to John Barnes.

Brendan Rodgers’s side are currently fifth in the Premier League table after a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.

Manchester United don’t have the consistency yet to challenge for a top three or four spot

United, however, are still waiting for their first Premier League win under new manager Louis van Gaal after draws with Burnley and Sunderland, and a surprise loss to Swansea.

And Liverpool legend Barnes believes 20-time English champions United will need to wait several years before remerging as a dominant Premier League force.

Asked if Liverpool will finish above United, Barnes told talkSPORT: “Absolutely. Man United will be back to where they believe they belong in the coming years.

“This season is too soon for them though, with the big change they made at manager and everything that’s going on.

“Liverpool are playing with consistently. They will be challenging Chelsea and Man City. I believe Liverpool will finish third but I don’t think they’ll be far off the top.

“Manchester United don’t have the consistency yet to challenge for a top three or four spot.”
