Liverpool’s summer signings taking time to settle, says Jason McAteer
Former Liverpool midfielder Jason McAteer stresses that the Reds have a new-look defence which is taking time to gel
Jason McAteer believes Brendan Rodgers’s summer signings are taking time to settle at Liverpool.
The Reds suffered a surprise 3-1 loss to West Ham United at Upton Park on Saturday, amounting to their third Premier League defeat of the season.
When you look at the defence against West Ham there were three new players in the back-four, so it will take time for them to settle
Rodgers signed eight new players in the summer transfer window, including full-back Javier Manquillo and Alberto Moreno, as well as centre-half Dejan Lovren.
And former Liverpool midfielder McAteer pointed out that it will take time for the Reds’s new-look defence to take shape.
“Obviously there are a lot of new faces Brendan Rodgers brought to the club this summer and it does take a little bit of time for those players to settle in and learn the philosophy,” McAteer told talkSPORT.
“Six of those new signings started against Aston Villa [a 1-0 defeat at Anfield] with five starting against Ludogorets in the Champions League, so obviously they’re not all singing off the same hymn sheet at the moment.
“If you take into account the way they played against Tottenham [an impressive 3-0 victory at White Hart Lane] there is hope for the Liverpool fans, it’s not all doom and gloom.
“But it’s not going to plan at the moment.”
McAteer added: “To be fair Brendan did that, he brought in players like Lovren, Moreno and Manquillo, who are all good players.
“But, again, when you look at the defence against West Ham there were three new players in the back-four, so it will take time for them to settle and I think it’ll all be ok in a couple of months, there’s certainly quality there.”
