Louis van Gaal admits that he is not convinced by Wayne Rooney’s position as a striker for Manchester United.

The Dutchman, whose side slumped to a shock 5-3 defeat by Leicester City at the weekend after leading 3-1, has hinted that he is planning to deploy new loan signing Radamel Falcao in a more central role.

“Rooney can play in more positions, he’s a multi-functional player and I have tried him in a striker’s position,” said Van Gaal.

“He has played well, but not spectacular. Falcao is a striker and I think he can do it better.”

The England and United captain himself insists that he is happy to play on the wing should Van Gaal opt to shift him out wide in future games.

“I’m happy to play out wide – I can do a job there and I can do a job up front,” said Rooney. “It depends on the situation of each game and what the manager wants me to do.”
