Joe Hart Had next to no chance of stopping Schurrle from scoring. Other than the goal, very little action was seen by the England international. 5/10

Pablo Zabaleta Operated in his customary role as a right-back come auxiliary winger. Booked for a clumsy tackle on Hazard on the edge of the box and was sent off for hacking Costa. 4

Vincent Kompany Won his personal battle against Costa and stopped the Spanish centre-forward’s scoring streak. Astute first half-display, but was caught out by Chelsea’s swift counter-attack. Combination of power and poise on the ball, top performance. 7

Eliaquim Mangala Debut day for the French man. Set the tone for City in the second-half with a fantastic recovery tackle to dispossess Hazard. Made few mistakes over the 90 minutes. 7

Aleksandar Kolarov Should be relatively happy with his defensive work. Helped quell the influence of Ivanovic’s forward runs. 6

James Milner (man of the match) Went at Azpilicueta from the off. Asked genuine questions of the Spanish full-back and was a constant outlet for City. While his final deliveries left a little to be desired, he persevered and provided a deft touch to tee the ball up for Lampard to level the score. 8

Fernandinho Picked up an early booking for chopping down Willian. Had a chance on the edge of the box but fluffed his shot on the 29 minute mark. Managed to make a timely intervention when he sliced a clearance away from the oncoming Costa. 6

Yaya Toure An invaluable member of the City team. Hit penetrating passes in the attacking-third and showed off his exquisite range of passing. Kept the yellow card count ticking over by bundling over Willian just before the break. His powerful presence in midfield kept City in the game. 7

David Silva Dropped deep too often throughout the first-half. Had a hand in City’s equaliser, the diminutive Spaniard picked out Milner with a delicate chip over the Chelsea defence. 6

Edin Dzeko Could have bagged a goal if he had reacted quicker in the penalty box, but was beaten to the breaking ball by Ramires. Hard working display in his little and large role with Aguero but couldn’t find the back of the net. Subbed off for Bacary Sanga on 70 minutes. 6

Sergio Aguero Half-chance on 30 minutes but couldn’t get over the ball to keep his shot down. Put in a shift but was starved of quality service. 5

Bacaray Sagna Came on and slotted in at the familiar role of right-back shortly after Zabaleta’s sending off. 5

Frank Lampard Was in the right place at the right time to tuck away Milner’s knock down. Looked slightly embarrassed to score against his old team. 6

Chelsea

Thibaut Courtois Possibly could have gotten down quicker to parry Lampard’s shot. Plucked the ball out of the air with ease time after time. Should be disappointed to miss out on a clean sheet. 5

Branislav Ivanovic Worked hard up and down the right-flank. Was part of a solid Chelsea defence. 5

John Terry Quietly went about his business and had looked to have done enough to keep City out for 90 minutes. Despite conceding the goal, it was an all-round solid performance from the Chelsea stalwart. 7

Gary Cahill Culpable for City’s equaliser. Got caught flat-footed by Silva’s ball over the top. Other than that lapse in concentration it was a relatively good day at the heart of Chelsea’s back four. 6

Cesar Azpilicueta Made a risky back-pass to his goalkeeper and almost cost Chelsea a goal early in the first-half. Grew into the game and put in a fine performance. Justified his return to the first team. 7

Cesc Fabregas Sat beside Matic in a double pivot and proved an ineffectual first-half for the ex-Barcelona man. Never got far enough forward to effect the game in an attacking sense. Wasted a free-kick from a very good position on 59 minutes. 4

Nemanja Matic Helped screen the Chelsea back four to very good effect, made it massively for the City players in the middle of the park. 7

Ramires Let his frustration get the better of him after a foul on Aguero and then petulantly kicked the ball away to which he picked up a booking. Fantastic reactions to deny Dzeko a certain goal inside the box. 6

Willian Was the only player asking questions of the City defence in the first-half. Kept the City defence honest. Ultimately tried to do too much on his own. Subbed off for Schurrle on 63 minutes. 6

Diego Costa Got little to no joy against Kompany and had a tough evening. Was booked for grappling with Zabaleta. Sent a shot crashing off the post after a sublime initial touch. Withdrawn for Drogba on 86 minutes. 7

Eden Hazard Virtually anonymous first-half. Despite a very quiet first-half, it was he that began the counter-attack for Chelsea’s opener and supplied the final pass for Schurrle to score from close range. 6

Substitutes

Andre Schurrle Finished off a fantastic Chelsea counter-attack and tapped in from close range to put the Blues 1-0 up. Found wanting once again in defence and failed to track the run of James Milner. 5
