Juan Mata is hoping that Manchester United can embark on a winning run after securing their first victory of the season by thrashing Queens Park Rangers.

Angel Di Maria gave the home side the lead when his free-kick delivery crept into the far corner in the 24th minute.

Ander Herrera then fired in from the edge of the box, before Wayne Rooney made it 3-0 heading into half-time.

Mata added a fourth when he powered home Di Maria’s miscued shot as loanee Radamel Falcao made his first appearance for the Red Devils as a 67th-minute substitute.

“We played much, much better,” said Mata. “From the beginning until the last minute we tried to score goals and that’s what we have to do with the players we have.

“It’s a very important win and it’s the first steps in a run of results, we hope.”

Record signing Di Maria was hugely impressive at Old Trafford as he notched up two assists as well as getting on the score-sheet in a man-of-the-match display.

And the Argentina international added: “I’m very happy for my debut and a first goal. I have been practicing those free-kicks this week, so it is not a surprise for me.”
