Gary Neville admits he isn’t surprised to see Juan Mata drop to the bench as Louis van Gaal looks to accommodate Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie.

At his media conference ahead of the trip to Leicester City, Van Gaal insisted that no player was safe in his United side except for captain Wayne Rooney.

And the United manager, who signed a three-year deal at Old Trafford, omitted Mata from his starting line-up to accommodate Falcao, Rooney and Van Persie.

“I’m not surprised. He was the easiest one to leave out,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“He has done well Mata when he has played in central areas and his goal-scoring record is good.

“But I always wonder whether he is going to fit the bill long term at United.

“When I watch him at Old Trafford, he isn’t dynamic enough and with Angel Di Maria in the team, and they have to get Radamel Falcao in.

“There is only so many positions in the team and someone had to make way, and I’m not surprised by that.”

United are looking to secure back-to-back wins under Louis van Gaal for the first time.
