Sergio Romero has insisted that he did not turn down a transfer to Manchester United this summer.

The Argentina goalkeeper was heavily linked with a switch to Old Trafford as Louis van Gaal looked to add further competition for first-choice shot-stopper David De Gea.

However, the 27-year-old says that he did not turn down the chance to join the Red Devils, as some reports had suggested.

“Many lies have been spread, like, for example, that I refused a transfer to Manchester United,” Romero told Radio Nacional. “To me, something like that is crazy.”

Romero, however, admits that he may seek a move away from Sampdoria after finding his first-team opportunities limited.

“I can’t do this for much longer,” he added. “I am ready to play and that I don’t want to keep sitting on the bench.”
