Nigel de Jong has admitted that he was flattered by the speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United this summer.

The Netherlands international was touted as a possible target for new Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal but a transfer to Old Trafford failed to materialise.

Now, the former Manchester City midfielder has revealed his delight at being linked with a possible move to the Premier League side.

“If many people like him [Van Gaal] respect me and recognise what I am doing, then I can only be proud,” the Daily Express quotes De Jong as saying.

Van Gaal opted to bring in De Jong’s Netherlands team-mate Daley Blind in the closing stages of the summer window.

De Jong joined AC Milan from Manchester City back in August 2012 in a £3.5m deal.
