Phil Neville believes Manchester United may need to spend another £100m before the Red Devils can think about challenging for the title.

The 20-time English champions suffered a surprise 5-3 loss to Leicester City after discarding a 2-0 and 3-1 lead at the King Power Stadium on Sunday.

Louis van Gaal

Louis van Gaal spent in the region of £150m on new signings last summer, adding Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Angel di Maria, Daley Blind and Radamel Falcao to his squad.

However, former United defender Neville feels manager Van Gaal must spend a further £100m on new signings, including a top-class centre-half.

“I know United have spent £150m,” Neville told BBC Radio Five Live.

“I think there’s another two transfer windows of similar amounts of money needed, maybe £100m, before they can even think about winning the title.

“I think the centre-back position is obviously the key area. Holding midfield or centre midfield needs addressing [too].”
