Man United transfers: ‘Louis van Gaal should sign Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk’
Man United transfers: Pat Nevin believes Celtic centre-half Virgil van Dijk would be perfect for the Red Devils
Pat Nevin believes Celtic centre-half Virgil van Dijk would be the perfect defensive signing for Manchester United.
The Red Devils have been heavily criticised for their poor performance at the back after a 5-3 defeat by Leicester City despite leading 3-1 in the second half at King Power Stadium.
If I was Manchester United, and Celtic fans wouldn’t thank me for it, I’d be on the phone and get Van Dijk down to Manchester United
Van Dijk has been a mainstay of the Celtic back four since the Netherlands Under-21 international completed a £2.6m move to the Scottish Premier League champions in June 2013.
Former Chelsea winger Nevin feels that the Celtic centre-half would provide a temporary solution to United’s defensive conundrum and could develop into a world-class player.
“If you lose the likes of Ferdinand, Vidic and Evra, you need to sort out your defence. They haven’t done that,” Nevin told Newstalk’s Off The Ball.
“They’ve started to do. Daley Blind is a good signing and we’ll have to see what more they’ll do.
“There is no doubt whatsoever that they need another major centre-half who was powerful, and preferably one who can play from the back.
“I’m almost describing to a tee a player like Van Dijk, who is playing for Celtic at the moment.
“If I was Manchester United, and Celtic fans wouldn’t thank me for it, I’d be on the phone and get Van Dijk down to Manchester United.
“He is absolutely nailed on to be a player who could have done the job. Even if it was for a short period of a year or two, before they got someone who is world class. You never know, Van Dijk could have grown into that.”
