Man United transfers: ‘Van Gaal will sign top-class centre-half in January’
Man United transfers: Louis van Gaal will sign a top-class centre-half in January, according to Mark Bosnich
Manchester United will sign a world-class centre-half in the January transfer window, according to Mark Bosnich.
Louis van Gaal has been criticised for failing to strengthen his back four in the summer despite spending £150m on new signings such as Angel di Maria.
United suffered a 5-3 loss to newly-promoted Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Sunday, sharpening focus on the Dutchman’s creaking defence.
However, former United goalkeeper Bosnich is tipping the Red Devils manager to land a top centre-half in the January transfer window.
“We’ll see a purchase of a top class central defender in January,” Bosnich told talkSPORT.
“They are talking about Michael Carrick playing in defence now because of the injuries and suspension. He’s not the long term answer though.”
On Monday, former Chelsea midfielder Pat Nevin identified Celtic centre-half Virgil van Dijk as the perfect defensive signing for United.
Nevin told Newstalk: “There is no doubt whatsoever that they need another major centre-half who was powerful, and preferably one who can play from the back.
“I’m almost describing to a tee a player like Van Dijk, who is playing for Celtic at the moment.
“If I was Manchester United, and Celtic fans wouldn’t thank me for it, I’d be on the phone and get Van Dijk down to Manchester United.
“He is absolutely nailed on to be a player who could have done the job.
