Gianfranco Zola believes his compatriot Mario Balotelli is the perfect fit for Liverpool.

The Italy international made his Liverpool debut at White Hart Lane last month but the 24-year-old didn’t get on the scoresheet as the Reds were 3-0 winners against Tottenham Hotspur.

I believe it is a massive opportunity for him to make a step forward in his career

Balotelli, who joined Liverpool in a £16m deal from AC Milan, was a controversial figure during his last spell in the Premier League at Manchester City.

While Chelsea legend Zola feels the former Inter Milan forward can be a hit at Anfield, Zola admitted the success of the transfer largely depends on Balotelli’s attitude.

“I hope Mario takes the chance very well and Liverpool can have a lot of benefit from it,” Zola told the Soccerex Global Convention in Manchester.

“I believe Mario technically and tactically is the perfect fit for Liverpool.

“I think it will depend a lot on Mario’s attitude towards it.

“I think it is very important for him. I believe it is a massive opportunity for him to make a step forward in his career and his knowledge of football.”

Balotelli scored 20 goals in 54 Premier League appearances during a two-and-a-half year spell at City.
