Roberto Martinez says it is too early to tell whether Everton duo Seamus Coleman and Steven Pienaar will be fit to face Liverpool in the Merseyside derby on Saturday.

The 33-year-old South African is still recovering from an injury which he suffered during the 2-2 draw with Arsenal at Goodison Park last month.

Meanwhile, Republic of Ireland defender Coleman suffered a blow to head during a 3-2 loss to Crystal Palace in the Premier League last weekend.

“Steven Pienaar is recovering really well so we’re going to assess him over the next few days,” Martinez said ahead of the derby at Anfield. “The same with Seamus. Both are in the same situation.

“It is too early to tell whether they’re going to be fit for the weekend.”

Whilst Martinez announced that midfielders Bryan Oviedo and Darron Gibson are available after their League Cup appearances, the Everton boss confirmed Ross Barkley remains sidelined.

“Ross Barkley is developing and recovering quicker than we thought, but he is still in the early stages,” Martinez added.

“Bryan Oviedo and Darron Gibson are fully fit after getting through the game on Tuesday.”
