Mesut Ozil excelled in the absence of Alexis Sánchez at Villa Park on Saturday, according to Arsenal legend Martin Keown.

The Gunners club-record signing broke the deadlock against Aston Villa as he slotted a low finish past Brad Guzan in the 32nd minute.

Ozil, who has been heavily criticised in recent weeks, turned provider to tee up Danny Welbeck for Arsenal’s second in a 3-1 victory.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger opted to rest £35m signing Sánchez for the trip to Villa Park, playing Ozil in a central role.

And former Gunners centre-half Keown highlighted Ozil’s match-winning performance in his preferred No10 position.

“With Alexis Sánchez not playing, the team was dancing for his boots. Sanchez will obviously come back in at some point but Ozil was magnificent in the central role today,” said Keown on Match of the Day.

The former Arsenal centre-half added: “Ozil was magnificent in the central role, he pressed all the right buttons and orchestrated all of Arsenal’s best attacks.”
