Alan Smith believes Mesut Ozil is a “quality player”, adding that the Arsenal midfielder’s price tag has worked against him.

The Germany international answered his critics with a goal and an assist in a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on Saturday, excelling in his preferred No10 role at Villa Park.

He is quality player, we tend to forget that. He price tag works against him

And Arsenal legend Smith feels that Ozil’s best position is behind the striker where the £42.5m signing can offer more variety to the Gunner side.

“The benefits [of Ozil playing in No10 role] are the fact that he can get more involved, he can go left, right or through the middle,” Smith told Sky Sports News.

“I do think we get a bit too preoccupied with it. He played on the flank for Germany. He had a decent World Cup, he contributed.
“Even when he has played out wide, he did come inside a lot.

“If you asked the player yourself, I’m sure he’d want to play in this position. He makes runs either side of the centre-forward.

“He is a player that sees the picture and the pass. He isn’t the only one in the Arsenal squad; Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla can all do that.

“He is quality player, we tend to forget that. He price tag works against him. He has been poor, but it is still early and he will be feeling better about himself.”
